Britut VaOsher is currently supporting Gideon Schulman who is raising funds for life-saving treatment for his Multiple Sclerosis. Gideon was eventually diagnosed in 2001 after experiencing multiple symptoms, when he temporarily lost his eyesight. Over the years the disease has taken a progressive form, limiting his walking, balance, energy levels, speech, memory, thought processing and leaves him in constant pain. Despite all this, Gideon is a role model, showing resilience, positive attitude and using his non working time to volunteer for charitable organizations. Gideon does not deserve this crippling disease.

Nobody knows what causes MS and there is no cure. Multiple Sclerosis is an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system. In MS, the immune system, which normally helps to fight off infections mistakes myelin (the protective coating around nerves) for a foreign body and attacks it. This damages the myelin and strips it off the nerve, either partially or completely, leaving scars known as lesions or plaques. This damage disrupts messages travelling along nerves; they can slow down, become distorted, or not get through at all. As well as myelin loss, there can also be damage to the actual nerve. It is this nerve damage that causes the increase in disability that can occur over time.

Approximately 15 years ago in Chicago a treatment was pioneered called HSCT (Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation), which halts any further progression and sees repair of the lesser never damage. The treatment harvests healthy stem cells, uses chemotherapy to wipe the immune system before stem cells are reintroduced. To date over 2,000 people globally have received the treatment with a 75% success rate.

In the UK, HSCT is administered in two centers to small groups of people with very narrow eligibility which Gideon does not qualify for. For this reason Gideon has elected to receive HSCT treatment in Mexico.

The cost of the treatment, tests, travel and associated costs comes to £60,000 GBP which Gideon is trying to raise.
